Soldier Receives a Truck

Mar 15, 2011

On Monday, December 24, 1pm at Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac, Wally Fanene and family will receive a 2008 modified Chevrolet Tahoe as the result of many supporters that came together to purchase a vehicle for him and his family. The local non-profit organization, All From the Heart, Inc. as well as Terry Gilmore from Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac and Mary Boyce from Temecula Valley High School organized the effort. See below for Wally’s story.

Wallace Haaheo-Kawaiwai Kerisiano Fanene
Sergeant, U.S. Army

Wally’s story
In July, 1988, The Fanene Family (a military family) moved to Temecula from San Diego. Wally attended 1st grade at Vail Elementary School and moved on to Temecula Middle School during his early youth. His freshman year started at Temecula Valley High School where he played Junior Varsity and Varsity Football and was a member of the Wrestling team. He is a member of the graduating Class of 2000.

After graduation, Wally spent the next two years in Hawaii and Alaska working for a moving company and driving 18-wheelers. In November, 2002, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and attended basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon completion of basic training and parachute jump school in March, 2003, he received orders to Korea but they were cancelled and he was reassigned to Scholfield Barracks, Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division.

In May, 2004, Wally’s unit deployed for 12 months to Afghanistan where he first experience combat duty. Upon completion of a safe 12 month deployment, he returned to Hawaii in May, 2005. In December, 2005, he got engaged to his high school sweetheart, Scarlet Salas and on May 20, 2006, they were married. Two months later, Scarlet became pregnant and a month after, in August, 2006, Wally left Hawaii for a 12 month tour to Iraq.

In March, 2007, he came home to Temecula for the birth of their daughter, Nalia Nakulu’ai Nazaria Fanene. After spending six days with his daughter, he returned to Iraq. His unit was due to return to Hawaii in August, 2007 when the President of the United States extended all U.S. troops to 15 month deployments.

On Saturday, September 8, 2007 while on patrol outside Kirkuk, Iraq, Wally was seriously wounded from a toe popper I.E.D. (a anti-personnel mine the size of a match box). He was medivaced to Balad, Iraq for emergency treatment where medical personnel amputated his right leg above the knee, his right hand below the elbow and his pinky finger on his left hand. He has limited use of his ring finger and also suffered permanent fragment wounds to his left leg and hand. Both his ear drums were damaged and he will require the use of hearing aides.

From Iraq, he spent two days in Lanstol, Germany and two weeks at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. at his request, he was transferred to Naval Medical Center, San Diego (the former Balboa Naval Hospital) on September 26th.

Wally has already started walking with his prosthetic right leg and is using his prosthetic right hand. Like other amputees, he does have his good days and bad days. He was a Sergeant and Squad Leader with Delta Company, 25th Infantry Division at the time of his injury.

Wally is the youngest child of Lynn Sr. and Daveleen (Iki) Fanene. He has two sisters (D’Lynn Fanene-Gascon, Maggie Fanene-Hiebert and a brother Lynn Fanene, Jr. All the Fanene family members still reside in Temecula.
